On 1 May 1994, 34-year-old racing champion Ayrton Senna was leading in the San Marino Grand Prix when his Williams car flew off the track at the Tamburello curve and hit a concrete wall at around 218km/h. The accident was caused by a steering-column failure and cost Senna his life.
